Basmati Rice

riz

Definition

A fragrant white rice with long, delicate grains.

Details

Basmati is a long-grain rice variety from the Indian subcontinent, grown mainly in Pakistan and India across the plains of Punjab and the Himalayan foothills. Its name means “full of aroma” in Hindi. The long, slender grains lengthen further as they cook and stay perfectly separate rather than clumping together. Its natural aroma (from the compound 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline) is unmatched by any other variety. Basmati is used for biryanis, pilafs and celebratory rice dishes served at Comorian feasts and weddings. SuqNaronane selects basmati aged at least 12 months, which deepens its fragrance and improves its texture once cooked.
